My Initial Top 10 Character Combinations in SoR

In case you haven't heard, we have a new set coming out in a little less than 3 weeks (most likely).  The spoilers are out there, notably swdestinydb.com has at least all of the text of the cards spoiled.

I figured checking out some of the new character combinations was as good a place as any to start looking at the new set.  The new set probably adds 100-ish new combinations in addition to what we had in Awakenings.  I'm only looking at NEW combinations, not the same ones we still have from awakenings, which will assuredly still be good.

10. eRey/Outer Rim Smuggler/Outer Rim Smuggler

The infamous infinite resource loop build.  For those that haven't heard of it, the loop involves having a Return of the Jedi in your discard and a Return of the Jedi as the last card in your hand.  You play it, triggering both Smuggler's text to get 2 resources, then fetch the other Return of the Jedi from your discard.  Repeat for a bunch of resources.

It's not the most reliable of combos and I don't think you'd build the deck to try to capitalize on the random chances you might get infinite resources - by including high cost cards for example.  I think you would build it similar to a Han/Rey deck that sometimes has the ability to know it can pay for all its cards and resource cost sides for the rest of the game.  I think that's powerful enough.

9. ePoe Dameron/eMaz Kanata

Poe gets a new friend that fits with his point cost.  This deck is getting a lot of hype, but I'm not so sure it's better than ePoe/eRey.  eRey's ability is just so good and got even better with the new set.

Maz brings along some action cheating, like Rey, and probably what most would consider a little bit better of a die.  You lose access to some of the powerful blue abilities, but get some good yellow ones.  And the U-Wing really, really likes Poe's special - that thing is a beast.

8. eJyn Erso/Rebel Commando

Jyn is a really powerful character, but she is just a hair unfocused.  Two damage sides, two discard sides - are you supposed to play damage or control?  Also her point cost is such that you are only ever getting a 3 character die build out of her, which apart from Vader/Raider, hasn't been that successful.

Despite that though, her ability is insane - practically saying play with 3 resources every turn instead of 2.  For elite Jyn, I think she pairs best with Ackbar or Rebel Commando, but I'm giving the Commando the nod here with his extra damage sides to play a more aggressive build.  Ackbar may be the choice for a more control build.

It could end up that playing regular Jyn with an elite Ackbar, Mothma or Padme might end up being a thing, since Jyn's ability is just as good with 1 die or 2, but it's hard not to take Jyn's die with high value sides for only 5 more points.

7. eLuke Skywalker/Maz Kanata

In Awakenings, people were trying run eLuke with Ackbar, but it just wasn't quite there. In SoR Luke gets a new best friend in Maz Kanata and I think they are going to make a solid pairing.  Maz gives Luke access to her ability and Fast Hands to really speed Luke up into getting his big dice resolved, whereas he was pretty vulnerable to removal in the past.

Also something like Lone Operative on Luke seems incredibly strong, especially if your opponent took out the vulnerable Maz early on.

6.  ePalpatine

Of course, ePalpatine - our first solo character deck - he can put out the damage like a mad man, but he is at risk of just being controlled out of the game.  There's some talk about doing a Palpatine/TIE Pilot deck to try to get Training onto Palpatine with Cargo Hold, but I think that is too gimmicky.

Plus if you haven't tried any deckbuilding with the new set, there's plenty of cards to include to fill out a solo-blue deck with 1 character.  And you don't need to go too crazy on the upgrades, only 3 slots after all.

5. eAurra Sing/eBala-tik

If you've read any other site's reviews of SoR, you've probably seen it thrown around a lot that Aurra Sing is going to be SoR's Grievous.  I think that's totally incorrect.

Grievous had a problem with a lack of support for a melee character in red.  Aurra Sing as a ranged character in SoR has lots of support.  This deck is going to hit incredibly hard, incredibly fast - watch out for it.

4. eAsajj Ventress/eJabba the Hutt

I think Asajj will take Dooku's place alongside Jabba in this control shell.  Asajj isn't as survivable by herself, but it gives your opponent two scary targets that are both putting a choke on them.  Blue and yellow both got some new survival cards, like Force Illusion and Armor Plating to make up for not having Dooku's ability.

3. eDirector Krennic/eBala-tik

When you control the battlefield this becomes the first 5 character dice deck, which I think is nothing to scoff at even if Krennic's die is all over the place.  In set 1, it was pretty clear 4 dice was superior to 3 (except for Vader/Raider), so I imagine 5 dice should be really good.

This red/yellow build gets access to a great suite of upgrades. and should be just highly efficient and powerful.

2. eJabba the Hutt/eUnkar Plutt

Possibly the ultimate control shell.  There's just so much control power in Jabba and Unkar's dice that it should be very frustrating for your opponent to play against.

This deck just has a plethora of great cards for it too, even being mono yellow.  Most likely one of the first decks I'll be trying.

1. eDarth Vader, Dark Apprentice/eFN-2199

If I had to put my money on the new Jango/Veers after SoR comes out, this would be it.  Just a brutal amount of damage on the base dice and with the addition of the Lightsaber Pike, Force Speed and the Z6 Riot Control Baton along with old standbys like Kylo Ren's Lightsaber, this deck will bring the pain.

In the coming weeks, I'll probably be going through some deck builds for some of these decks.  If you haven't had the chance to go to the deckbuilder on swdestinydb.com and try to build some decks with the new set, you're in for a shock.  It's frustrating when you have to figure out how to cut 20 cards from your deck to get down to 30....

Draft Primer I’ve only done 3 drafts of Star Wars Destiny so far, so some of this is subject to change as I get more experience, but ...
